Population and Housing Census [hh/popcen]
This is the second consecutive 5-yearly Census of Tokelau conducted by Statistics New Zealand. The first population counts took place in the late 1800's while the first Tokelauan census in which the Department of Statistics was involved in planning, development and design was the 1986 census. It was then followed by other censuses in: 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, then this one in 2011.
Information from the census provides an overall view of the people of Tokelau and the places where they live. Census information is used to plan vital public services, such as education, health, housing, and transport. It is also used to help understand how society changes over time.
Every person, household and institution present in Tokelau on Census Night, 18 October 2011, were enumerated to collect information on persons and households throughout the country, using a uniform methodology.The intent was to provide a count of all persons present within the Tokelau at that time. More specifically, the purpose of this census was to collect, process and disseminate detailed statistics on population size, composition and distribution at a small area level. The 2011 Tokelau Population and Housing Census contains data collected on HOUSEHOLDS and INSTITUTIONS: dwellling type, home ownership, household assets, access to services and energy sources; INDIVIDUALS: age, population group, language, religion, citizenship, migration, fertility, mortality and disability; and economic characteristics of individuals, including employment activities and unemployment.

The scope of the 2011 Population and Housing Census includes:
INDIVIDUAL- Basic demographic characteristics of individuals including age, sex, ethnicity, religion, migration, demography, educational attainment, economic activity and employment, social profile and fertility;
HOUSEHOLD- Basic household characteristics of the private dwellings, including tenure, sanitation, water and electricity, household wealth and household activities.
National coverage.
The universe of the 2011 Tokelau Population and Housing Census is all occupied households (HHs) and covered every person present in Tokelau on Census Night, 18 October 2011 including all de jure household members and residents of institutions. Tokelau public servants and their immediate families are counted in Apia, Samoa, on census day.

The questionnaires for the Tokelau 2011 Population and Housing Census include:
DWELLING/HOUSING QUESTIONNIARE
Main building structure, flooring material, primary roofing material, outer wall material, rooms in main building, age of construction, toilet facilities, main source of water for drinking/washing, household’s main source of lighting/cooking, rubbish collected by village workers, rubbish disposal, household item ownership, internet access, sky television access,Household livestock ownership ( pig, chicken), household income sources, total household income.
INDIVIDUAL QUESTIONNIARE
Usually resident population, citizenship, place of birth, migration, ethnic origin, religion, language, school attendance, highest level education highest qualifications, marital status, labour force, work for pay, unpaid work, smoking, literacy,fertility.
The questionnaire was published in English, Tokelau and Samoan (can be found in the External Resources) and was very similar to the 2006 Census one.

The entire enumeration of Tokelau Population and Housing Census took place on Census night the 18 of October 2018. It was not necessary to continue enumeration through to November to ensure that as many people as possible were included.
