Abstract
Dr. McArthur, Senior Fellow in Demography at the Australian National University, directed the 1956 Census of Fiji and played a part in planning others, including the 1956 Census of Western Samoa. Author of a series of reports on the populations of most major territories in the South Pacific, in which she reviewed the data on population changes from the first days of European contact, she summarizes in this article present population prospects in the islands of Polynesia.
