Series Information
This is the 6th Population and Housing Census (PHC) undertaken by the Vanuatu Statistics Office (VNSO). The first one was in 1967, then in 1979, 1989, 1999, 2009 and the last to date, the 2020 PHC. In addition to these PHC, there was an urban-only enumeration in 1986 and a Mini-Census in 2016 that followed the devastating tropical cyclone Pam.
Abstract
Taken every 10 years, the census information is an important development planning resource available to Government, Province and Local Administrations, International Agencies, NGO's, businesses, communities and the general public.

Topics include: number of people by age and sex and residence, marital status, religious denomination, birthplace, labour force status, occupation, industry, mother tongue and languages spoken, educational characteristics, number of children ever born and whether still alive, livestock owned, crops grown, housing and household characteristics, and other areas.

The universe of the 2020 Vanuatu Census is all occupied households (HHs) in Vanuatu. HHs are defined as a group of people (related or not) who pool their money, cook and eat together. It is not the physical structure (dwelling) in which people live.

The questionnaire was published in three languages: English, French and Bislama. It consists of 13 sections:
-HOUSEHOLD: Household characteristics; Household production; Household deaths; Household assets; Household income.
-INDIVIDUAL: Individual characteristics; Residence and migration; Disability; Parental survival; Education and literacy; Labour force; Fertility and mortality; Communication and Internet.

The questionnaire was designed using the World Bank's software Survey Solutions.
