Abstract
This report is an output of a FAO Technical Cooperation Consultancy Mission (TCP Project
Number: TCP/NAU/3301) to Nauru requested by the Government of the Republic of Nauru. The
aim of the mission was to collect relevant information to provide an assessment and
recommendations on the necessary actions required for sustainable crop and livestock
developments in Nauru, and where appropriate, draft approriate FAO Technical Cooperation
Project proposals for funding to be considered by FAO.
The mission took place from 2-23 May 2012. The consultant was given seven main tasks
for this mission in accordance with the Terms of Reference (TOR). A key part of the mission
was focussed on consultations with government agencies and stakeholders involved in
Agriculture activities. This was a major undertaking that required meetings with as many officials
from government agencies and field visits to as many of the relevant stakeholders as possible.
This mission report outlines the findings of the consultancy and necessary actions for
improving the development of agriculture in Nauru.
From the findings of the mission, 3 Technical Cooperation Projects (TCPs) have been
identified as critical to the advancement of the Agriculture Sector in Nauru to contribute to
improve food production, food security and sustainable livelihoods in Nauru. The TCP projects
identified include:
1. TCP for the Strengthening of the Institutional Capacity of the Department of
Agriculture.
2. TCP for Nauru Household Integrated Agro-Forestry & Crop Utilisation
3. TCP for Nauru Household Small Scale Poultry Production
The detailed draft TCP Project Proposals are attached as attachments 4, 5 and 6.
