Abstract
The major causes of child mortality in Papua New Guinea are pneumonia, malnutrition,measles meningitis, low birthweight, and neonatal sepsis. Malaria is common in coastalregions. Pneumonia causes about 40% of all deaths among children under age 5. Mostneonatal deaths are caused by bacterial sepsis combined with low birthweight; 23%of babies have low birthweight. 1
